Why Choose Bob Gordon?

• Large, pendulous (downward-hanging) berry clusters
• Strong yield potential
• Excellent berry size and cluster density
• Mid-season ripening
• Cold hardy to Zone 4

The downward-facing clusters may offer some natural protection from sun and bird pressure compared to upright-fruiting cultivars.

Ideal For:

• Growers focused on yield
• Value-added processing (syrup, juice, wine)
• Orchard-scale production
• Mixed cultivar systems

Bob Gordon performs especially well when planted alongside Adams, Ranch, or Pocahontas for strong cross-pollination.

Pollination Partners for Bob Gordon

For best fruit set, plant 2–3 different American elderberry cultivars within 50–60 feet of each other.

Strong pollination partners for Bob Gordon include:

These combinations provide good bloom overlap and help Bob Gordon reach its full yield potential.

For more detail on bloom timing and cultivar combinations, see our comparison guide.

Spacing & Establishment

• 6 feet within rows
• 12–14 feet between rows
• Full sun
• Prune annually for cane renewal

Because of its heavy fruit clusters, annual pruning helps maintain manageable structure and strong new growth.
