Why Choose Adams Elderberry?

Adams is one of the most widely planted traditional American elderberry cultivars. It is valued for:

• Strong upright growth habit
• Consistent fruit production
• Mid-August ripening window
• Large clusters of dark purple-black berries
• Excellent performance in Midwest climates
• Cold hardy to Zone 4

Because of its larger mature size (6–10 ft), Adams performs especially well in traditional hedgerow systems and full-row orchard layouts.

Ideal For:

• Growers wanting mid-season harvest timing
• Traditional elderberry hedgerows
• Larger orchard plantings
• Northern climates with cold winters
• Mixed cultivar plantings for improved pollination

Pollination Guidance for Adams

For best fruit set, plant at least 2–3 different American elderberry cultivars within 50–60 feet. Strong pollination partners for Adams include:

Ranch
Bob Gordon
Pocahontas

Mixed plantings improve berry size, cluster fill, and yield stability. For bloom overlap details and harvest timing comparisons, visit our cultivar comparison page linked above.

Spacing & Establishment

• 6 feet apart within rows
• 10–14 feet between rows
• Full sun preferred (6+ hours daily)
• Consistent moisture during establishment

Adams is vigorous and upright. Adequate spacing allows proper airflow and strong cane development.Annual late-winter pruning encourages productive new growth and manageable plant structure.
